The Key- Northfield Union of Youth

Our Story Northfield Union of Youth (NUY) was founded in 1993 by a Youth Board and a Board of Directors. Its first major goal was to open a substance-free youth center as a safe place for all youth to feel welcomed and encouraged. The youth center opened in December of 1995 and became known as “The Key”, named in memory of Northfield High School student Lindsay Key Perkins. Lindsay championed the idea of a place for youth to call their own, but tragically died before the doors opened. In 2010, The Key moved from 303 Water Street South to 109 6th Street West. It continues to be governed by a Youth Board, who make programming and policy decisions as well as interview and approve all staff hires and Adult Board members. Our mission is to provide power and voice to youth and to create a caring and enriching community. Who We Are NUY is a youth-led youth services organization that provides a platform and a system for youth to fully address their needs, the ideas they have to enrich their community, and the support to ensure they are never alone. Who We Serve NUY removes all barriers for youth to participate. There are no qualifications, assessments, registrations, or fees. The Key is open to all youth ages 12–20 and housing support outside of the Key is available for youth up to age 24. What We Do NUY prioritizes the need to amplify youth voices, opinions, and perspectives. NUY combines supportive services with enrichment activities to make a meaningful impact. Youth are the experts on youth.
